a Summary, etc Ο επισκέπτης της Λαογραφικής συλλογής του Εθνικού Ιστορικού Μουσείου ενθουσιάζεται, αλλά και προβληματίζεται με τον πλούτο της φαντασίας, που αποτυπώνεται στη μορφή και τη διακόσμηση των παραδοσιακών ενδυμασιών. Φαίνεται απίστευτο ότι μία τέτοια ποικιλία έργων, εξαιρετικής μάλιστα τέχνης, προέρχεται από το μόχθο των απλών ανθρώπων, συνηθισμένων στη βαρειά αγροτική και ποιμενική δουλειά ή ζυμωμένων με τους καημούς της θάλασσας. Το πλούσιο καλλιτεχνικό συναίσθημα του λαού εκφράζεται στις πολύμορφες παραλλαγές της ελληνικής φορεσιάς ανάλογα με τις γεωγραφικές και κλιματολογικές συνθήκες, τα ήθη, τα έθιμα και τις παραδόσεις, τον τρόπο ζωής και τις τοπικές ιδιομορφίες. Η ελληνική φορεσιά διατηρεί στοιχεία από παλαιότερες εποχές, της αρχαιότητας και της βυζαντινής περιόδου, με τις αναπόφευκτες ανατολικές και δυτικές επιδράσεις. Οι τελευταίες είναι εμφανέστερες εκεί όπου υπήρχε εντονότερη επικοινωνία, όπως στα νησιά του Ιονίου ή εκείνα του Αιγαίου, καθώς και στα μεγάλα αστικά κέντρα. Είναι φανερό ότι οι φορεσιές διαφέρουν σημαντικά από περιοχή σε περιοχή. Εντυπωσιακή όμως είναι η εκπληκτική ομοιομορφία, που παρουσιάζουν όσες προέρχονται από την ίδια περιοχή, γεγονός που καταδεικνύει τη δύναμη της τοπικής παράδοσης. Αλλά αυτήν την τόσο σημαντική λεπτομέρεια για τη μελέτη της ελληνικής φορεσιάς δεν είναι δυνατόν να την αντιληφθεί ο επισκέπτης του Μουσείου, ούτε ο αναγνώστης αυτής της έκδοσης. Γιατί, αναγκαστικά, επιλέγονται και παρουσιάζονται φορεσιές που φαίνονται σαν μονάδες έργων τέχνης, ενώ στην πραγματικότητα κάθε μία από αυτές είναι αντιπροσωπευτική ενός τύπου, που επαναλαμβάνεται σχεδόν πανομοιότυπα σε μία ορισμένη περιοχή. Στον ελληνικό χώρο ο λαϊκός πολιτισμός κάτω από το καθεστώς της δουλείας μπόρεσε ν' αναπτυχθεί αυτόνομα μέσα στην κοινότητα. Έτσι, η λαϊκή τέχνη στην ουσία της εκφράζει το αθροιστικό σύνολο των κοινών παραδοσιακών μορφών του Έθνους, με τις τοπικές ιδιομορφίες και τις εσωτερικές παραλλαγές. Αυτό γίνεται ιδιαίτερα αισθητό με την πολυμορφία της ελληνικής φορεσιάς.

a Summary, etc The visitor of the Folklore collection of the National Historical Museum is excited, but also concerned with the richness of the imagination, which is reflected in the form and decoration of traditional costumes. It seems unbelievable that such a variety of works, of exceptional art in fact, come from the toil of ordinary people, accustomed to heavy agricultural and pastoral work or kneaded with the misery of the sea. The rich artistic feeling of the people is expressed in the multifarious variations of the Greek costume depending on the geographical and climatic conditions, the customs, traditions and traditions, the way of life and the local peculiarities. The Greek costume preserves elements from older times, of antiquity and the Byzantine period, with the inevitable eastern and western influences. The latter are most evident where there was more intense communication, such as in the Ionian Islands or those of the Aegean, as well as in large urban centers. It is obvious that the costumes differ significantly from region to region. Impressive, however, is the amazing uniformity, presented by those who come from the same area, a fact that demonstrates the power of local tradition. But this important detail for the study of Greek costume can not be understood by the visitor of the Museum, nor the reader of this edition. Because, necessarily, costumes are selected and presented that look like units of works of art, when in fact each of them is representative of a type, which is repeated almost identically in a certain area. In Greece, popular culture under the regime of slavery was able to develop autonomously within the community. Thus, folk art in essence expresses the cumulative set of common traditional forms of the Nation, with local peculiarities and internal variations. This is especially felt with the diversity of the Greek costume.
