- The Global Positioning System (GPS) is now widely used in many land, sea, and air based navigation applications. One of the biggest disadvantages of this navigation system is its poor accuracy. Differential GPS (dGPS) systems are used to improve the accuracy obtainable from a standard GPS unit. There are several ways of achieving this and this paper presents the results of a study carried out to assess the performance of marine Radio Beacon based dGPS systems in the Greater London area. Such a system should be useful in marine, as well as in vehicle navigation work.
