This study consists of two sections, the theoretical and practical approach. The theoretical section deals with two aspects of knowledge management. The first aspect is knowledge management as a field of application or profession. The second one is the discipline of knowledge management, which involves the process of education of knowledge managers who will execute this profession. Analyzing knowledge management as an application field, involves the basic elements of the knowledge management cycle in organizations such as find/create, organize, share, use/reuse and audit. Knowledge management as a discipline is of an interdisciplinary nature, which is nourished by fundamental disciplines such as communications, business administration, information technologies and library and information science. The field study section of the article includes undergraduate students from the Department of Information and Knowledge Management/Faculty of Communications/Baskent University. The field study attempts to identify differences between the Department of Information and Knowledge Management of Baskent University and the Departments of Information and Knowledge of Hacettepe, Ankara and Istanbul Universities. The field study discovered that although all these departments have the same name, the Department of Information and Knowledge Management of Baskent University differs from the other three departments in five basic areas. These differences can be listed as the method of education, goals, the affiliated faculty, staff education for different professions and the academic program. Empirical findings of the study indicated that Baskent University students were unaware of these differences prior to their enrollment in the said Department of Baskent University and that they became conscious of the differences after taking courses on knowledge management.
